Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has been missing in action on Capitol Hill this week, as her office says her absence is for a health-related reason.
“The senator is in California this week dealing with a health matter,” a spokesperson for Feinstein told reporters.
“She hopes to return to Washington soon,” the representative added.
Fox News has since learned that the senator has been “is receiving treatment for shingles in a California hospital.”
“I was diagnosed over the February recess with a case of shingles. I have been hospitalized and am receiving treatment in San Francisco.” Feinstein’s office shared. “I hope to return to the Senate later this month.”
Feinstein told the outlet that she expects to make a “full recovery.”
At the age of 89, Feinstein is the Senate’s oldest member, and in recent years her colleagues have raised concerns about her mental fitness.
Feinstein, who has been a member of the upper chamber since 1994, announced last month she would not seek re-election in 2024.
Three prominent House Democrats — Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee — have announced campaigns to replace Feinstein in the Senate.
Another Senate Democrat, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, is experiencing health problems.
The senator’s office recently released the following update on Fetterman’s health after he admitted himself to a hospital for depression:
“We don’t have a lot to update folks with since there’s no real news to report except that John is doing well, working with the wonderful doctors, and remains on a path to recovery. He is visiting with staff and family daily, and his staff are keeping him updated on Senate business and news.”
The statement added: “Our team is moving full speed ahead and working tirelessly for the people of Pennsylvania. Just last week, we opened a new office in Erie and will be opening several more offices in the coming weeks.”
